Project Challenge

Based on the topics discussed during the workshop, your TEAM CHALLENGE is to develop, pitch, refine and present an idea for a classroom collaboration. Use this template to collect and synthesize ideas. You may also choose to use the Understanding by Design Unit Template

Project Title: Multilingual ESL Exemplar Course in Moodle
Participants level/age: Upper Elementary / Lower Middle School
Curriculum focus: ESL Support
Timeline: 6 Months
Learning outcomes: Students will recognize the vocabulary on the Dolch list with 80% accuracy.

In what way will classrooms connect globally? (Tools and expectations

Using our international student and parent communities in both Korea and Japan, we will create a sample ESL self-study course in Moodle. This course will be freely available to anyone who would like to upload it into their own Moodle installations.

Moodle, Audacity

What are the modes of communication? Synchronous? Asynchronous? (Tools and expectations)
We will communicate both synchronously through chat / Skype and asynchronously through wikis and discussion forums in Moodle itself.

What do you and your students need to know to be reliable and responsible online learners? What do you need to prepare to complete a classroom collaboration?

First, Phil will compile the word list. Either students or Phil and Christian will enter the data into a format that can be used.

Students / Parents who will contribute will need to learn how to enter data in whatever format we need. Also, for the recording phase they will need to learn how to use Audacity (Free, Open source, and Cross-platform software for recording audio.)

We will complete fully packaged and multimedia rich demo course. Our goal is that the course itself will be ready "out-of-the-box" for others to use in one of the more than 50,000 Moodle installs worldwide.
