Project Challenge

Based on the topics discussed during the workshop, your TEAM CHALLENGE is to develop, pitch, refine and present an idea for a classroom collaboration. Use this template to collect and synthesize ideas. You may also choose to use the Understanding by Design Unit Template

Project Title: You Must Read This! Middle School Book Promo Project
Participants level/age: Grades 5-8
Curriculum focus: reading, library, technology
Timeline: ASAP to eternity:)
Learning outcomes: (the following standards/outcomes are taken from McCrel and NETS.S)

Uses reading skills and strategies to understand and interpret a variety of literary texts
Reflects on what has been learned after reading and formulates ideas, opinions, and personal responses to texts
Understands inferred and recurring themes in literary works (e.g., bravery, loyalty, friendship, good v. evil; historical, cultural, and social themes)


6. Makes multimedia presentations using text, images, and sound (e.g., selects the appropriate medium, such as television broadcast, videos, web pages, films, newspapers, magazines, CD-ROMS, Internet, computer-media-generated images; edits and monitors for quality; organizes, writes, and designs media messages for specific purposes)

In what way will classrooms connect globally? (Tools and expectations)

Students will contribute to their class' cache of book promo trailers that will be uploaded to a wiki and accessed by classmates, schoolmates, parents, and students in other schools in Japan, Korea, and Canada.

What are the modes of communication? Synchronous? Asynchronous? (Tools and expectations)

All of the modes of communication are asynchronous.The project will be ongoing.
What do you and your students need to know to be reliable and responsible online learners?

Understanding and effectively communicating to a broader audience than simply their classroom teacher and classmates.
Using Creative Commons & attributing credit to source.
Ensuring to have Works Cited at end in proper bibliographic format.

What do you need to prepare to complete a classroom collaboration?

We have created a wiki on wikispaces (Across the Globe) that each participating class may join (by invitation only) and upload complete book promo trailers to.

How will the classrooms work together? What are the parameters of the project? (Tools and expectations).

Language Arts: reading, responding, evaluating; adapting original text to script
Technology: learning multimedia tools & editing
Library: selecting books & learning proper citations

How will contribution be encouraged and monitored (Tools and expectations)
Teachers will select which book promo trailers are ready for a broader audience. Selected trailers will be posted on shared class wiki (Across the Globe). Students may be given some time in class to view the trailers of other students.

What choices will learners have to accommodate different learning styles and abilities?
Differentiate presentation format: speaking, dramatic acting, claymation, narration using Voice Thread.
Students may also select from a variety of tools to support their multimedia presentations (Powerpoint, Keynote, Prezi, Photo Story, Iphoto, Imovie)

What are the expected outcomes from the joint knowledge creation and sharing activities?
Students will have a more purposeful forum and more purposeful audience for whom to evaluate literature that they have read independently.
Students will have access to a bank of book promotion trailers that will introduce them to a variety of books that they will be encouraged to read.

How will the project and collaboration be celebrated and shared at its conclusion?
Advertise/Share wikiURL at middle school assembly
Host "Film Premiere" party in the library with snacks & invite school community
